I like to imagine the Dragonfire Dagger was forged from a promise between a princess and the dragon she was supposed to slay.

Told she must slay the dragon or else a conquering army would take her kingdom, the princess sought out the dragon, not to defeat, but to ask for protection from an unlikely ally. The dragon saw that the princess’s heart was true, so the dragon offered her something far more valuable than the promise of fire - a few scales from her own unbreakable hide. For they would give the princess courage in the face of conquest and the power to protect what cannot protect itself.

The princess forged those scales into an unstoppable dagger and saved her kingdom from those who sought to destroy her, simply for the misguided love of power.
